Watching a Broadway show in China is no longer a luxury and a faraway dream. At least in Hangzhou. Here, you may take your family members or friends to a theatre and enjoy a roadway classic. Hangzhou Theatre has been the first to join BOBITMC or New Century Nederlander¡¯s Theatre Network. This marks an important milestone in the Chinese performing industry¡¯s internationalization drive.
The first Broadway musical ever presented in Hangzhou was the Sound of Music in 2005. Its huge cost and risk left the local performing industry with a mixed feeling of excitement and concern. As the first member of the New Century Nederlander¡¯s Theatre Network, Hangzhou Theatre will be the first to benefit from the risk-and-benefit-sharing mechanism and scale economy the network had promised regarding the presentation of Broadway classics. The Broadway will also bring its nearly century-old practices in theatre management and operation, systematic and powerful support in ticketing, marketing, facility management and client development. On top of that, necessary funds will be made available to the theatre to renovate its facilities. The theatre will thus be brought to the forefront of a national performing network and platform.
As a result of the strategic alliance between the Theatre Network and Soong Ching Ling oundation, every one RMB sales revenue from each ticket will be donated to the foundation. The donation will be used to support education programs of those poor adolescent people who have showed great musical gifts. Besides, a China-U.S. Musical Camp will be arranged by both parties to boost the art education of young people.
Chen Jixin, the board chairman of the Theatre Network, is also an ISPA director for two terms and a director of Soong Ching Ling Foundation. He is well known for his successful planning and arrangements in staging the Three-tenors¡¯ Concert in the Forbidden City, an attention-grabbing event in the bid for Olympic Games. After chairing the joint venture¡¯s board, he will integrate quality resources, facilitate the presentation of Broadway musicals or other world-famous plays across the country, create a performance and operation mode of Broadway shows by taking into account China¡¯s own characteristics and thus bring a better and more prosperous performing market.
