From May 4th to 6th, the classical Broadway musical Anna and The King will be staged in the Hangzhou Theatre for 3 days in a row. This is the second time that the original Broadway musical comes onto the stage in Hangzhou following The Sound of Music and the “first bite-taking” event after Hangzhou Theatre joined “Broadway China Network.”
For Chinese people, their knowledge of Anna and The King came from the Hollywood movie with the same title in 1999, which was played by Yun-Fat Chow and Judy Foster. The king played by Yun-Fat Chow was in a scholarly bearing and got good credit. The movie was the 3rd movie that had been adapted from the original musical.
“The authentic Broadway musical had always been performed at least 1 week in a certain locality during its world performance tour. However, it will be only performed in Hangzhou for 3 days. I am afraid it may be the case for the first time worldwide.” Ke Chaoping, Manager of Hangzhou Theatre said. Although it will be only staged for 3 days, the performance costs are already as high as RMB 2 million. Reviewing that The Sound of Music had not been as popular as expected in Hangzhou two years ago, Ke Chaoping believed that there would be great risks involved for another market testing of Broadway musical in Hangzhou. For them, the biggest victory would be “suffering no losses”.
